Abstract: Removing lumen water using supercritical CO2 pressure cycling has been shown to eliminate meniscus-driven collapse during subsequent moisture conditioning of wood. A computational fluid dynamics dewatering model of a simple capillary tube was used to predict and optimise the dewatering of a porous ceramic and softwood. The empirical dewatering results were best described using a modified Chapman-Richards growth curve, with both wood and ceramic behaving in a similar manner. Pressure was found to have the greatest effect on dewatering compared to initial-pressure-hold-time, pressure-release-time or temperature. The fundamental capillary tube model adequately predicted dewatering provided empirical tortuosity and porosity information was incorporated into the diffusion coefficient as a lumped parameter. The findings provide a predictive dewatering model that is applicable to porous materials in general, and provides insight into the removal of water from ceramics and wood at a fundamental level.
