P1‐264: Generation Program Recruitment Strategy (alzheimer Disease Prevention Clinical Trials) Carried Out by Glasgow Memory Clinic
Year: 2019
Type: article
Abstract: The Generation Program consists of two clinical trials (Generation Study 1 & 2) to investigate novel pharmacological agents in cognitively unimpaired subjects at increased risk for the onset of clinical symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. The pre-screening process is complex, requiring different steps from ApoE genotyping to going forward to study screening. Here, we show the recruitment strategy implemented by Glasgow Memory Clinic to pre-screen 2100 subjects in the program so far. Advertisement campaign was performed to find potential suitable participants using multiple media on a monthly basis including Radio, Television, Social Media and Ad words. All enquiries and appointments were dealt with by a specific in-house Patient Liaison Team overseen by the Development Director consisting of 9 persons; 1 full time Manager, 5 full/part time call handlers working on enquires 5 days a week and 3 receptionists. The team dealt with telephone pre-screening, appointments, cancellations and reschedules. Approximately 4200 enquiries were received from advertising that has run throughout 2018. Pre-screening was performed by phone to pre-select suitable participants and 2600 subjects were offered appointment to consent for genotyping using cheek swab. Telephone screening lasted from 5 minutes to 30–40 minutes depending on the nature of the enquiry and the extent of medical history. From Feb to Dec 2018, 2201 swabs were analysed for ApoE genotype; average 200/month. Genotype was disclosed to 47 ApoE ε4 Homozygotes and 460 ApoE ε4 Heterozygotes. Here, we show the effectiveness of recruitment strategy, highlighting the importance of an adequate and specific multimedia advertisement campaign focused on the importance of genetics and prevention in AD. On the other hand, a well-resourced and organized team (Patient Liaison Team) in the site is a key factor for the successful pre-selection of target population by increasing efficiency and avoiding unnecessary workload in following stages. The process, whilst successful, remains under continuous review and it is likely that other approaches will be adopted by different centers based on their staffing levels, experience and available infrastructure.
