Abstract: This paper studies the question of reference in scientific Statements. Close observation of an exposition of botaniste and pedologists in the Amazonian forest allows to describe the sequence of small steps through which it is possible to speak about the soil of the forest and the savanna. At each Step the object is simultaneously thing and sign, matter for the following Step, form for the preceeding one. In this sequence of operations the scientist accepts to lose at each Step most of the elements of the things they are handling, in Order to get at the same time the possibility of identifying new patterns fitting with the calculus Centers of their scientific networks.
