BIOEFFICACY OF PLANT EXTRACTS IN THE CONTROL OF PHYLLODY DISEASE OF SESAME (Sesamum indicum L.) IN MAIDUGURI

Year: 2020
Type: article
Abstract: Phyllody or ‘green flowering” is a very serious disease in most sesame growing regions which has been a major threat to both the cultivation and improvement of sesame especially in warm climates. Therefore, a field trial was carried out during the 2017 rainy season at Maiduguri (latitude 11 0 51' N, 13 0 05' E) located in the Northern Sudan Savanna of Nigeria. The aim was to evaluate the efficacy of Neem ( Azadirachta indica) seed extract, Balanite ( Balanites aegyptiaca) fruits extract and Ginger ( Zingerber officinale ) extract as foliar spray in the control of phyllody disease of sesame. The treatment was laid out in split-plot design with plant extracts in the main-plots and the rates in sub-plots, replicated three times. The treatments consist of (neem, ginger and balanite extracts) and five application rates (0.0, .250, 500, 750 and 1000ml/5 liter of water) obtained from 1.0 kg dry products applied at 3, 6 and 9 weeks after sowing. Results indicated significant (p<0.05) difference between plant extracts and among application rates. With respect to plant extracts, disease incidence and severity of phyllody was lower, with better crop performance in terms of stand establishment and grain yield. Application rates, also reduced disease incidence and severity and increased yield from each successive additional application rates. The Neem seed extracts was the best treatment and gave higher grain yield throughout the period of assessment compared with the untreated plots followed by Balanite fruit extracts. In conclusion, the use of plant extracts in the control of phyllody disease of sesame can help the poor-resource farmers to reduce the sole reliance on synthetic pesticides. These indigenous, richly available and easy to apply botanicals are effective and less costly; eco-friendly should be highly encouraged among these categories of farmers in Sudan Savannah.
