Abstract: The nearshore waters of India along the \n8060 km coastline support lucrative fisheries \ncontributing about 90% of the total marine fish \nlandings of the country. The brackishwater \necosystems also afford capture fisheries of some \nmagnitude, besides traditional cultue fisheries in \ncertain maritime States. We have an area of \n9 million hectare of inshore waters of less than \n18 m depth and 1.7 million hectare of \nbrackishwaters in the adjoining coastal zone. \nIncresising interest is being evinced in the \noptimum utiUzation of these water resources by \naugmenting their productivity through artificial \nreefs and seafarming.
