Abstract: Autoimmune hepatitis is a rare pathology characterized by biochemical and histological alterations. Two subtypes are known: type I affects children and adults, and type II affects almost exclusively children. So far there are no specific diagnostic criteria and it is considered a pathology of exclusion, although there are certain laboratory and histological alterations related to this entity. It can be asymptomatic or symptomatic, and the treatment of choice is immunosuppression. The use of non-invasive methods such as elastography can be useful in follow-up surveillance, both to evaluate treatment and to prevent complications. In its evolution it can present advanced hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis, requirement of liver transplantation and death due to hepatic insuffieciency. The aim of this review is to present the latest evidence related to autoimmune hepatitis.
