“When I'm writing a story, I am really good” Exploring the use of digital storytelling technology at home
Year: 2023
Type: article
Abstract: Throughout childhood, children negotiate their realities through expressing their values, affect, and experiences. Digital storytelling has been shown to foster this process of sense making. In this paper we report on a study designed to examine how parent-children pairs use stories together to express their identities, focusing on how two interaction design scaffolds typically embedded in digital storytelling technologies support families to make their stories. In a field study with seven parent-child dyads, families completed a series of storytelling tasks at home, each task followed by a diary and a final interview. The study shows that child agency is a critical value underpinning digital storytelling activities in the home. While the interaction design scaffolds considered were found to benefit the process of storytelling, one of them also triggered power tensions between parent and child. Our findings contribute new design sensibilities for digital storytelling intended for the family context.
