Narrative habitus: how actors connect episodic and continuous change in the moment
Year: 2023
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Owing to their different assumptions about time, and how they respectively define the past as objective or subjective, episodic and continuous organizational change have been deemed incompatible. Recently, however, scholars have argued for the possibility of integrating the two into a common ontological framework. Chapter 8 joins this discussion by extending recent efforts of integration through the construct narrative habitus - a habitus-based conceptualization of temporality combined with a definition of narratives as embodied and embedded. The construct provides an integral temporal view that allows us to see continuity and change as mutually intertwined because actors’ inclination to perceive an event as change, and narrate it as such, is shaped by dispositions acquired as actors move through time. By exploring continuity and change from this perspective, the chapter draws attention to how the past is simultaneously acting and enacted - a structuring and structured structure that ensures continuity both in continuous and episodic change.
