Neonatal sepsis protocol
Year: 2024
Type: preprint
Abstract: The neonatal sepsis continues to be an important public health problem in many countries. In Ecuador, it represents one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality among newborns, especially in premature or low birth weight neonates. The diagnosis is based on the presenceof risk factors, clinical criteria, inflammation-infection markers, and alterations in the bloodcount, as well as the performance of blood cultures. It is essential to identify the origin of theinfection and isolate the pathogen, although this is not always possible. Healthcare providers shouldinitiate empirical antibiotic therapy as soon as sepsis is suspected, and subsequent adjustmentsshould be based on the antibiogram, preferably in short-duration regimens and with close monitoring.Consideration should be given to de-escalating the treatment once the infectious focus is controlled. The most serious complications of neonatal sepsis include meningitis, septic shock, and death. Theappropriate and rational use of antibiotics, along with the early identification of at-risk neonates, can help reduce the incidence of neonatal sepsis. The sepsis treatment protocol of the Hospital Gineco Obstétrico Isidro Ayora is presented, atertiary care center that has been attending the most complex obstetric and perinatal cases sinceits inauguration. This protocol was conducted following the guidelines outlined in A ReportingTool for Practice Guidelines in Health Care: The RIGHT Statement.
