Exploring the Fracture Point Behavior of a Spinning Disc with Gradient Material and Varying Thickness Through the Tresca Yield Theory

Year: 2024
Type: preprint
Abstract: This research investigates the yield threshold in a rotating disk with variable thickness, applying the Tresca yield criterion. The study focuses on a Functionally Graded Material (FGM), constructed from tailored materials, and employs small deformation theory under plane stress conditions. Parameters such as elasticity modulus, density, and yield strength are modeled as power functions of the radial position, with Poisson's ratio assumed constant due to its minimal variation across materials. The governing equation for the rotating disk is solved analytically. The study also considers the impact of the disk’s cross-sectional profile, which, along with the material composition, influences the effective stress distribution. The thickness of the disk changes radially according to a power function. Various scenarios for the initiation of yielding and subsequent plastic deformation are evaluated. The results are validated through comparison with findings from studies on homogeneous and graded disks of constant thickness. The analysis reveals that incorporating a radially variable thickness significantly affects both the stress distribution and the yield initiation point in disk design.
