Enhanced Hybrid Synchronization Control of Grid-forming Converters

Abstract: Grid-forming (GFM) technology often faces stability issues during extreme disturbances, as outlined in grid codes. A solution to ensure improved robustness against large phase jumps is the hybrid synchronization control (HSC) that introduces voltage-based synchronization (VBS) to the GFM synchronization loop. The HSC, however, encounters challenges in weak grids and can disrupt active power reference tracking in a steady state if the converter is subject to timescale mixing from cascaded inner control loops, which most high-power converter applications cannot rule out. The paper presents a novel and enhanced hybrid synchronization control (eHSC) that further improves transient stability for a wide range of grid strength by incorporating feedforward compensation (FFC) through a lagging filter. The eHSC effectively ensures active power reference tracking in a steady state despite timescale mixing while allowing the proper transient response in case of phase jumps. Simulations demonstrate that the eHSC achieves superior transient stability in both weak and strong grids compared to traditional power synchronization control (PSC) and existing HSC methods. The paper further shows how additional outer loop controls should be discounted in the HSC in general.
