Abstract: Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are magnetic field sensors which can be used for different biomedical applications. Due to their modularity and small size, they can be flexibly arranged over the region of interest. For inverse calculations, it is necessary to know their exact location and orientation. In this paper, we compare three different ways to localize OPMs: 3D structured-light scans, a 3D point digitizer and a coil array. We used each modality ten times on a head phantom to assess their consistency. 3D scans provided the most reliable way to localize OPMs with an average difference of sensor distances of just 0.2mm and an average difference in sensor orientations of 0.5∘ in all directions. We also discuss modality-specific advantages.
