“High Prices for Recycling”

Year: 2025
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Mineral green hills beyond a low-lying river are painted on silk deepened golden brown by time. It's a landscape that invites dreams of utopia. But a closer look reveals it to be less than pure and, indeed, a trash heap of history; not a painting but a photomontage of lawn-green tarpaulins, polluted water, and mountains composed of plastic bags, rubble, and worse -toxic waste. The work of the photographer Yao Lu's (b.1967) hand and eye is revealed as those dreams give way to the grim realities of ecological disaster. This short essay explores the photographic practices that Yao employs to create such dystopic landscapes. What can the artist's process of (re)making images teach us about the practices of art and design history?
