More about...emergency medicine. Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) in the emergency unit
Year: 2007
Type: article
Abstract: Non-invasive ventilation has become a \nfrequently used modality in intensive \ncare units in South Africa. Although it is \nnot yet standard practice in our country, \nnew research proves that there is a \ndefinite place for non-invasive positive \npressure ventilation (NPPV) in the \nemergency unit when managing a patient \nin acute respiratory failure. Managers \nof emergency units should consider the \nproven benefits for patients, adding this \ntreatment modality to their units. All \nstaff using NPPV should be adequately \ntrained. The availability of a pulmonary \nphysiotherapist helps a great deal with \nthe implementation and management of \nNPPV.
