Year: 2007
Type: preprint
Abstract: In today’s corporate world, board diversity is a much talked-about topic and gender diversity is an important aspect of board diversity. The purpose of the current study is to examine whether the existence of gender diversity affects the financial performance of commercial banks in Bangladesh. The sample for the study consists of listed banks with the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) of Bangladesh for the period of 2002-2005. Financial and non-financial data for this study were collected from the annual reports of the banks. Return on equity (ROE) and Return on assets (ROA) have been used to measure the financial performance. We find a paradoxical relationship between gender diversity in the boardroom and financial performance of commercial banks. This paper adds to the existing body of literature on gender diversity and financial performance studies by investigating the relationship between gender diversity in the boardroom and financial performance of commercial banks in Bangladesh.
