Epistemography: How to Know what Students Know, and are Supposed to Know
Year: 2008
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: We need to know better what students know and what they are supposed to know. But it is less easy to do than it appears at a first glance, particularly when students shift from secondary studies to undergraduate mathematical studies. This question is at the core of a new theory called epistemography. Following epistemography, mathematical knowledge is categorized in conceptual, semiolinguistic, instrumental, about the rules of the game and identification. Epistemography allows us to accurately analyse what the students know or are supposed to know or to learn during their mathematical studies.
