Abstract: On the basis of several simulation studies conducted previously and analysis of train traffic system for the Shinkansen railways, it was perceived that computer simulations for a complex system should be carried out in an on-line processing environment. This paper discusses firstly about a general purpose simulation system in an on-line processing environment, next, describes a methodology and a technology of the system, and lastly gives an outline of the train traffic simulation system for the Shinkansen railways, which have been developed.
