Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study aims to investigate the neoclassical convergence hypothesis within theframework of spatial economics, emphasizing the importance of incorporating spatialneighborhood relations and interactions. The paper first examines pioneering studies onthe convergence hypothesis, followed by an analysis of academic research thatincorporates spatial interactions. Furthermore, the article presents a comprehensivereview of studies conducted on the convergence hypothesis in Türkiye, with a specificfocus on whether these studies consider spatial relations in their analyses. The findingsreveal that spatial neighborhood relations play a crucial role, particularly in intra-countryregional convergence analyzes. Consequently, the paper argues for the inclusion ofspatial neighborhood effects in the analysis of intra-country convergence in Türkiye. However, it is observed that this aspect has been relatively overlooked in previousstudies. This review highlights the significance of considering spatial interactions whiletesting the convergence hypothesis and provides valuable insights for future research inthis field
