Wastewater utilization assessment in algal biomass production and bioremediation

Year: 2017
Type: article
Abstract: The use of microalgae for the production of biofuels and other bioproducts is considered expensive. The introduction of liquid waste secondary as a culture medium can provide the best cost-benefit for cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus productivity when exposed to concentrations of 100% wastewater. Another purpose was to evaluate the nutrients of removal efficiency by species. Cultivation in wastewater UASB reactors, a domestic source, other visceral source, was operated for ten days. The domestic medium was higher in productivity, 330.2 mg.l-1.dia-1 by Chlorella vulgaris and 251.7 mg.l-1.dia-1 by Scenedesmus obliquus. At the same medium, the species removed about 88% PT and PO4-3 and 100% NTK. However, in visceral wastewater COD removal was highest, 91.5% by Chlorella vulgaris.
