The Prayer of Cyril of Turov at the Saturday Matins

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Cyril of Turov is an author of a cycle of prayers. It consists of twenty-one texts: the three prayers (Matins, Hours and Vespers) for each day of the week. In Old Russian writing, the prayers functioned in three different ways: as a complete cycle, as a group of texts or as separate prayers. For this reason, the different genres have different textual histories. Unlike the stable text of Cyril’s homilies, the text of Cyril’s prayers was edited by Old Russian scribes to varying degrees. Saturday morning prayer (Matins) has a complicated textual history. Its text is represented by five groups of the basic version, depending on the available additions. It also has an abridged version, later included in the old printed editions of Cyril’s prayers in Vilno. The interpolations are predominantly in the list of saints. Additions were not simultaneous and depended on the preferences of the scribes or the management of the monastery. Subsequently, the remembrance of the living and the dead from the Saturday morning prayer was used in the creation of the new text. Despite the considerable number of secondary readings in the copies of the prayer, the author of the article clarifies the variant closest to Cyril’s text, created in the second half of the twelfth century.
