Early Experiences With Cohort Postgraduate Supervision for Radiography Students
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Traditional apprenticeship models in postgraduate supervision can lead to student isolation and power imbalances. This study assessed whether cohort supervision could better address the needs of postgraduate radiography students by providing a more structured and collaborative framework. This reflective supervision project was undertaken to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of the cohort supervision model for supporting postgraduate students. A series of three cohort-based seminars was conducted in 2024 and 2025. The model featured expert presentations, discussions and structured student–supervisor engagements. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected via anonymous feedback forms to capture participant experiences. Thematic analysis was conducted on the data to identify themes related to experiences of the cohort model. Thematic analysis identified six key themes: research skills development, ethics conceptualisation, engagement, session structure, learning environment, and practical support. Participants reported increased research confidence and clarity, particularly in defining topics and mastering writing conventions, which indicates that the cohort model may foster a collaborative environment that addresses common challenges in methodology and supervision. The findings suggest that a model that integrates cohort-based seminars for collaborative learning with traditional one-to-one supervision for individualised support holds strong potential for optimising postgraduate radiography education. This approach can mitigate the limitations of the apprenticeship model while capitalising on the strengths of peer-supported learning.
