Growth and survival response of saline Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1758) larvae to varying durations of thyroxine immersion

Abstract: Saline tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) is highly valued for its superior nutritional content and savory taste compared to freshwater-reared counterparts, resulting in both domestic and international market demand. So, increasing production is essential; however, salinity adaptation remains a major challenge, as shifts in salinity significantly affect fish metabolism and hinder optimal growth. One promising approach to enhance larval performance is the application of thyroxine hormone (T4). This study investigated the effect of T4 immersion duration on the growth and survival of saline tilapia larvae. The experiment was conducted from May 1 to June 17, 2024, at the Hatchery and Cultivation Technology Laboratory, Aquaculture Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Malikussaleh University. A Completely Randomized Design was used with six treatments (A: control; B: 8 h; C: 16 h; D: 24 h; E: 32 h; F: 40 h) and three replications. ANOVA results showed significant effects on specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), daily growth rate (DGR), and survival rate (SR). The best outcomes were observed in treatment E, with length SGR of 2.56% per day, weight SGR of 7.91% per day, FCR of 1.11, DGR of 1.2 g per day, and SR of 90%. Water quality remained within optimal ranges throughout the study.
