Sand Production Risk Analysis of Sandstone Reservoir With Multiple Depletion and Overpressure Conditions

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In sandstone reservoirs, sand production is a significant problem, especially in multiple depletion and overpressure scenarios. Therefore, it is challenging to accurately forecast the onset of sand when the reservoir stresses vary with production. To solve these challenges, this study aimed to carry out risk analysis of sandstone reservoir with multiple depletion and overpressure condition. The methodology employed was used to integrate petrophysical and rock-mechanics data, in-situ stress analysis, and critical drawdown calculations, and aid with coupled geomechanical-flow modeling under sequential depletion and overpressure conditions. Findings reveal that frequent depletion contributes to a significant rise in effective stress leading to shear and tensile breakdown in weak, highly porous sandstones in addition to the sudden occurrence of sanding occurring as a result of a close-out of overpressure in the wellbore. It is concluded that the history of pressure and redistribution of stress are potent in the control of the risk of sand production, and predictive geomechanical modeling can be depended upon as the sound-based in proactive sand management, the optimal production approach, and enhanced well integrity in sandstone reservoirs
