The Invariant Core A Minimal Structural Requirement for Identity-Preserving Systems
Year: 2026
Type: report
Abstract: This paper isolates and formalizes the Invariant Core: the minimal internal structure required for a system to preserve identity across change. While many architectures define mechanisms, optimization procedures, or learning strategies, fewer isolate the structural requirement that must exist prior to all mechanisms: identity preservation. The Invariant Core is defined as the recursive, multi-scale, identity-preserving structure within the Reference role of a triadic or diamond architecture. It detects drift, prioritizes invariants under strain, and gates irreversible action. The formulation is substrate-neutral and introduces no algorithms, metrics, or implementations. Its purpose is to establish conceptual priority for identity-first governance in adaptive systems.
