Modelling economic development based on innovation–statistical approaches

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The article reveals the significance of innovation-related factors as key determinants of contemporary economic growth. The purpose of the study is to empirically test the impact of digitalisation, innovation activity, and research and development (R&D) investment on the dynamics of GDP per capita. The research applies statistical methods of multivariate regression, cluster analysis (k-means), cross-validation, and comparison of alternative models, using a sample of six countries with different levels of development (the United States, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, India, and Kenya). The results of regression modelling indicate a high level of statistical significance for all selected variables. The digitalisation index has the strongest impact on GDP growth, confirming the global trend of reinterpreting digital transformation as a key driver of productivity. Investment in R&D, the number of start-ups, and patent activity also demonstrate a positive effect. Country clustering identifies three groups with different levels of innovative capacity, which enables the formulation of differentiated policy approaches for each cluster. A comparison of the baseline and the innovation–statistical models shows the superiority of the latter across all key accuracy criteria (R², MSE, MAE, CV). The study also provides practical recommendations for public policy, particularly for Ukraine, concerning support for start-ups, the development of digital infrastructure, and statistical system reform. The findings have both theoretical and applied significance and may be used in the development of strategies for sustainable innovation-driven growth under global challenges.
