Abstract: Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs) are a significant public health problem in the United States and globally. Consequently, there is a critical need to conduct clinical and epidemiological research on AUD in order to better understand, manage, prevent, and treat this disorder. Complicating this research is the fact that AUD is characterized by significant within diagnosis heterogeneity. With the aim of better understanding this heterogeneity, as well as the many risk factors for developing AUD, the NIAAA Intramural Clinical Research Program conducts extensive phenotyping of all participants enrolled in the program's natural history protocol. The objective of this project is to maintain and develop a clinical research program for all patient volunteers and normal volunteers studied by NIAAA investigators as part of the NIAAA Intramural Clinical Research Program. This is accomplished via a Natural History Protocol that collects a standardized series of assessments and questionnaires. Phenotype data include psychiatric diagnoses, a variety of alcohol-related assessments and measures including lifetime and recent consumption and alcohol response phenotypes, personality and impulsivity measures, depression and anxiety symptoms, current and early life stress and trauma, aggression, suicidality, smoking, IQ, sleep quality, pain, and overall quality of life. Laboratory measures, vital signs, and ECG data are also available. The data collected under the Natural History Protocol serve as a shared resource for broader secondary and exploratory analyses related to the etiology, heterogeneity, health-related consequences, management, prevention, and treatment of AUD.
