Abstract: In Italy, 1876 was the year of the so-called “parliamentary revolution”. The first government of the Left was formed, led by Agostino Depretis. During those months, the trial of the internationalists responsible for the attempted insurrection of 1874 and their young leader, Andrea Costa, took place in Bologna. What had driven those young militants to act? And what expectations, later dashed, did the political shift of 1876 raise?
