Type: article
Abstract: The Japanese fo lk music movement of the early 1970s has received considerable attention from scholars , largely because of its ant卜war and counterculture characteristics.By contrast, the earliel college student-based fo lk boom, built around the performance of cover versions of acoustic songs by commercially-oriented American folk-pop groups such as the Kingston Trio and Peter Paul & Mary, has been relegat巴d to a historical footnote.Yet as will be shown, this early 1960s fo lk boom with its aspirational longing for American college life and the promise of social harmony through collective vocal expression, was the foundalion on which the 1970s movement was constructed.Using web-based sources, blogs , and oral interviews of the key musicians, this article explores the impact and infl uence of Japan's first folk boom on nol only the early baby boom generation's musical preferences but their overall identity and values.
