Awareness of occupational side effects of autopolymerizing acrylic resin among dental professionals: A cross-sectional survey

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Introduction: Autopolymerizing (cold cure) acrylic resin is widely used in dental practice for provisional restorations, repairs of dentures, fabrication of Custom trays and record bases, orthodontic appliances. Despite its extensive use, exposure to its chemical constituents—particularly methyl methacrylate—poses potential occupational health risks to dental professionals. Aim: To assess the level of awareness regarding occupational side effects associated with autopolymerizing acrylic resin among dental professionals. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted among dental professionals, including undergraduate students, postgraduate students, private practitioners and lab technicians. A self-designed structured questionnaire consisting of 15 questions assessed knowledge of composition, health hazards, and preventive practices related to cold cure acrylic resin. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 120 participants responded to the survey. While 72% of participants were aware that autopolymerizing acrylic resin can cause occupational health issues, only 38% had adequate knowledge of specific systemic and dermatological effects. Approximately 45% reported regular use of personal protective equipment while handling acrylic resin. Awareness levels were higher among postgraduate students compared to undergraduates. Conclusion: The study reveals moderate awareness but insufficient detailed knowledge regarding occupational side effects of autopolymerizing acrylic resin among dental professionals. Enhanced educational initiatives and strict adherence to occupational safety protocols are recommended to minimize health risks.
