Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy) and cognitive health: A scoping review of evidence-based neuroprotective insights from in vivo studies
Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Shankhapushpi ( Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy) is renowned for its nootropic and neuroprotective properties. This scoping review synthesizes in vivo studies exploring its therapeutic potential in mitigating neurodegenerative and neuropsychic disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, anxiety, and depression through neuroprotection, cognitive enhancement, and mood-regulation action, attributed to antioxidant, anticholinesterase, and anti-inflammatory activities. Key phytoconstituents, including scopoletin, quercetin, and kaempferol, have demonstrated significant benefits in enhancing memory, reducing oxidative stress, and promoting neuronal survival. This review showcases its potential as a natural alternative for managing cognitive decline and neurological conditions by comparing the efficacy of the herb with standard treatments like donepezil and rivastigmine. The data search was systematically conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and AYUSH Research Portal, with relevant studies identified through specific keywords and Boolean operators. After screening and duplicate removal using Rayyan software, 20 in vivo studies were included. Included in vivo studies suggest that C. pluricaulis Choisy improves cognition through acetylcholinesterase inhibition and oxidative stress reduction, with some effects comparable with donepezil and rivastigmine.
