Islamic Religious Values’ Assimilation: Strategies for Inspiring Mathematics Learning for MTs Students in West Papua, Indonesia

Year: 2026

Study design: Clinical Trial
Abstract: This study investigates the assimilation of Islamic religious values in mathematics learning for Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) students in West Papua, Indonesia. It examines how integrating Islamic values into mathematics instruction influences students’ academic achievement, intrinsic motivation, and classroom engagement. A mixed-method design was employed with 40 MTs students, using a 40‑item motivation questionnaire and a 40‑item multiple-choice pretest and post‑test. A one-tailed paired-samples t-test showed a statistically significant improvement in students’ mathematics achievement after the integration of Islamic religious values into classroom learning (t = 11.247; p < 0.001). Qualitative data from interviews with six students and two mathematics teachers corroborated the quantitative results, indicating stronger motivation, more positive attitudes toward mathematics, and greater participation during lessons. Students reported that mathematics learning was not only an academic obligation but also part of their religious responsibility and self‑development, while teachers observed that Islamic values helped students connect mathematical concepts with moral and spiritual meanings. These findings suggest that the assimilation of Islamic religious values is an effective pedagogical strategy for enhancing mathematics learning in Islamic educational settings in West Papua.
