Abstract: This study was aimed at the investigation of the effect of sub-lethal concentrations ofrifampin on some enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli virulence factors. We studied the effectof sub-lethal concentrations of rifampin on the adherence properties by the “Salting out”test and hemagglutination test, and on the expression of the termolabile enterotoxin (LT)by GM1-ELISA. These tests were applied on the strains grown in the presence ofsubinhibitory concentrations (½ and ¼ MIC) and without rifampin.Our data show that subinhibitory concentrations of rifampin may be capable of decreasingthe adhesiveness and the level of LT enterotoxin expression of enterotoxigenic Escherichiacoli.
