Abstract: Lateral adhesion of sessile drops is important in many everyday phenomena and applications, yet many fundamental questions remain unanswered. This is largely due to a lack of suitable methods to measure the lateral adhesion of drops. Here, we describe recent progress in the measurement of drop adhesion. We call the force required to start sliding of a drop “static drop friction”. Energy is dissipated once a drop begins to slide. The force required to maintain a certain sliding velocity is called “dynamic drop friction”. There are two main methods to measure static and dynamic drop friction. The first is the drop adhesion apparatus, in which a cantilever is used to detect the force. The second is the tilted plate method in which gravity-driven drop sliding is observed. Both methods are complementary, since they operate at constant velocity and constant force, respectively. We focus on water as a liquid because of its abundance and relevance.
