Optical frequency comb based light sources for advanced spectroscopy applications

Year: 2024
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Optical frequency comb technology has revolutionized laser spectroscopy because it allows one to rapidly measure multiple molecular transitions with high resolution and precision. However, frequency combs are not readily available in all spectral regions of interest. For this reason, the development of optical frequency comb technology in the mid-infrared spectral region is of special interest for science and industry. In this thesis work, a simple and versatile method for near- and mid-infrared optical frequency comb generation is presented. The method is based on a seeded parametric down-conversion process. The potential for generating fully stabilized mid-infrared frequency combs using this method is demonstrated for the first time during the course of the thesis work. Furthermore, the method has been extended and adopted for the operation in nonlinear waveguides, which helps to reduce the input power requirements. The method is very versatile in terms of the frequency and phase adjustments, which was thoroughly investigated in the thesis. Last but not least, a special passively coherent dual-comb spectroscopy technique is presented. This technique combines all the benefits of the presented frequency comb generation method and enables rapid acquisition of spectra in a fully free-running configuration.
