Abstract: Introduction. The use of controlled-release fertilizers (Controlled-Release Fertilizers, CRFs) is one of the promising areas of development in modern agriculture, as its ensure increased efficiency in the use of nutrients, reduced technological costs, and reduced negative impact on the environment. At the same time, the use of polymer shells is accompanied by the risk of accumulation of microplastics in agroecosystems, which highlights the need for a comprehensive assessment of the benefits and potential environmental threats of this technology. Methods. The study used the dialectical method of cognition and a systemic approach, which provided a comprehensive analysis of agronomic efficiency, economic feasibility and environmental consequences of the use of controlled-release fertilizers. The methodological basis of the study is a set of general scientific and special methods, namely: methods of analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, comparative analysis and abstract-logical method of cognition. Results. It has been established that the use of CRFs contributes to increasing the efficiency of nutrient use, reducing nitrogen losses, reducing the number of technological operations and reducing the anthropogenic load on aquatic ecosystems. At the same time, it has been substantiated that the use of synthetic polymer shells is a source of accumulation of microplastics in soils, which negatively affects the physical properties of the soil, soil biota, plants and can act as a carrier of toxic substances. The current state of the use of encapsulated fertilizers in Ukraine is analyzed, the main areas of their application, advantages and constraining factors of their use, as well as the features of the regulatory regulation of these processes in Ukraine and the European Union are determined. Discussion. Further research should be linked to the introduction of biodegradable materials for fertilizer encapsulation, harmonization of national legislation with European Union requirements, introduction of monitoring of microplastics accumulation in agricultural landscapes, and expansion of the use of precision fertilization technologies.
