Tracking the simillimum: Can individualized homeopathy break the obstinate weight gain cycle of obesity in PMOS? A narrative review
Year: 2026
Type: review
Abstract: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), now referred to as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), includes a range of symptoms including ovulation dysfunction, androgen excess, insulin resistance, obesity, sleep disturbances and psychological issues. The presence of excess body weight can exacerbate these symptoms; however, PCOS can happen in people who do not exhibit obesity. A review of literature published through July 2026 reveals that individualized homoeopathy may have some benefit in interrupting the weight gain cycle that often characterizes PMOS. The search of literature included biomedical databases, clinical guidelines, Indian epidemiology studies, homoeopathic research journals, classical repertories and materia medica texts. The results of the literature search show that PMOS is common in India, particularly among those with obesity. Homoeopathic treatment for PMOS is based upon individual symptoms of the patient, rather than a prescription for a specific disease. Small randomized studies have indicated improvements in menstrual cycles and certain quality of life parameters following individualized homoeopathy plus lifestyle modification compared to placebo plus lifestyle modification. Another study of Ferrum metallicum 30C reported the restoration of menstrual cycles in a group of women with PMOS. More studies have reported various positive outcomes following homoeopathic treatment of PMOS patients. However, these studies were limited by small sample sizes, single-centre studies, high dropout rates and varying outcomes. So, while individualized homoeopathy appears to be of some benefit in the management of PMOS, there is no evidence that it independently leads to weight loss or the interruption of the PMOS syndrome's weight gain cycle. Therefore, further studies must be conducted to investigate its potential as a treatment for PMOS.
