Abstract: Agro-industrial residues, such as Jatropha curcas cake, contain toxic and antinutritional compounds that limit their use in animal feed. In this study, 41 fungal strains were isolated from fermented foods and agroindustrial residues with the aim of selecting to select those that could be used in Solid-State Fermentation (SSF) for the detoxification of Jatropha meal for animal feed. The ability of the isolates to grow on Jatropha cake was evaluated by comparing their growth rates on a Jatropha cake-based medium and on a PDA medium. Next, theirpotential to produce proteases, lipases, amylases, and tannases was evaluated using the spot method on nutrient agar by adding skim milk, Tween 80, potato starch, and tannin, respectively. The apical growth of the isolates on the Jatropha seed cake-based medium ranged from 0.04 to 0.21 mm/h, while on the PDA medium it ranged from 0.08 to 0.25 mm/h. The maximum enzyme activities were 0.324 for proteases, 0.439 for amylases, 0.393 for tannases, and 0.417 for lipases. Strains 2PBr, 1AFiS and 9PCo showed interesting enzymatic activities. These isolates are therefore promising candidates for use in SSF to remove toxic and antinutritional compounds from Jatropha meal and enable its safe use in animal feed.
