Hypoxylaceae DC.

Abstract: Hypoxylaceae DC. Notes. Hypoxylaceae was introduced by de Lamarck and de Candolle (1805), but the name was not adopted in modern classifications and was long treated as a synonym of Xylariaceae (Hyde et al. 2020). Integrative studies incorporating multi-gene phylogeny, morphology, and chemotaxonomy have since validated Hypoxylaceae as a distinct family within Xylariales (Wendt et al. 2018; Daranagama et al. 2018). Species of Hypoxylaceae are predominantly saprobic or endophytic (Hyde et al. 2020). The sexual morph of Hypoxylaceae is characterized by globose to subglobose or elongate, cylindrical to pyriform ascomata embedded in stromata, arranged monostichously; the interior may be zonate or filled with liquid. Asci are unitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, and 4–8 - spored. Ascospores are ellipsoidal to subglobose, brown to black, rarely hyaline, and mostly possess a germ slit (Hyde et al. 2020). The asexual morph is characterized by hyaline to light-brown, smooth, branched conidiophores, cylindrical conidiogenous cells, and hyaline, smooth to roughened, ellipsoidal conidia (Daranagama et al. 2018; Wendt et al. 2018). To date, ten species from six genera in this family have been documented from cave environments worldwide (Suppl. material 1: table S 2).
