Motor network reorganization and functional recovery in patients with glioma: A narrative review
Year: 2026
Type: review
Abstract: : Gliomas induce complex motor network alterations through infiltration and surgical injury. The brain’s capacity for neuroplasticity can help preserve motor function despite tumor-related disruption. The aim of this narrative review is to examine literature published from 2005 to 2026 that integrates evidence of both structural and functional plasticity within key motor pathways, including the corticospinal tract, the primary and secondary motor cortices, premotor–motor cortical connections, and corticocortical association fibers. By synthesizing findings across these pathway-specific networks and incorporating network-level connectome perspectives, this narrative review strives to characterize patterns of motor network reorganization in patients with gliomas. Understanding these mechanisms has important clinical implications relevant for surgical planning and postoperative rehabilitation.
