CodedFRER: Enhancing Reliability for FRER Protocol via Erasure Codes in Error-Prone Networks

Abstract: Frame Replication and Elimination for Reliability (FRER) is a protocol designed for high reliability with low latency in Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) by transmitting replicated frames over redundant paths. However, we find that FRER’s replication-based redundancy strategy leads to critical reliability challenges in error-prone networks, where high error rates may cause the correlated loss of all replicas for a single frame (we term correlated all-replica loss). Additionally, FRER eliminates redundant frames at path intersections to avoid duplicate delivery, raising the risk of correlated all-replica loss. Existing work on improving FRER’s reliability mainly focuses on optimizing routing and scheduling to reduce the eliminations at path intersections, yet fails to tolerate correlated all-replica loss. In this paper, we propose CodedFRER, an erasure-codingbased FRER architecture that transmits coded parity frames over selected paths to handle correlated all-replica loss and achieve high reliability in error-prone networks. We also propose two methods to reduce decoding overhead and optimize original and parity frame paths. Experiments show that CodedFRER improves Quality of Service (QoS) by 42.49% in error-prone networks, while reducing end-to-end delay by $\mathbf{2 2. 6 7 \%}$ and network traffic by 27.18%, compared to the state-of-the-art strategy.
