A Cost-Effective LoRa-Enabled Environment Monitoring System for Poultry Farms Using Distributed Multi-Sensor Nodes

Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Poultry farming involves the rearing of birds for meat and egg production, where maintaining proper environmental conditions is essential to ensure bird health and maximize farm productivity. This paper presents the design and development of a cost-effective LoRa-enabled wireless monitoring system for real-time measurement of ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2), temperature, and humidity in poultry farms. The proposed system consists of a master node and multiple distributed slave nodes, each built using an ESP32 microcontroller and equipped with multiple sensors. The DHT22 sensor measures temperature and humidity, the MH-Z14A NDIR sensor monitors CO2concentration, and the ME3-NH3sensor detects ammonia. Slave nodes transmit environmental data to the master node using LoRa communication, achieving reliable data transfer over distances exceeding 900 m under practical farm conditions. The master node displays real-time values on a TFT screen and uploads data to a cloud-based InfluxDB server for remote monitoring and analysis. Custom-designed PCBs improve hardware integration and scalability. Experimental results show that the system provides temperature and humidity accuracy within ±1°C and ±7% RH, CO2variance within ±150 ppm, stable 24-hour operation and low packet loss (0–3.4%). The proposed architecture offers a high-performance, low-cost alternative to industrial monitoring systems, giving poultry farmers reliable real-time insights for better farm management.
