Dataset of gross nitrogen transformations

Year: 2026
Type: dataset
Abstract: We compiled studies reporting gross soil N transformation rates following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Scopus and Web of Science were searched in November 2025 using the following string: Topic = (gross nitrogen mineralization* OR gross nitrogen immobilization* OR gross nitrification* OR gross ammonium immobilization* OR gross nitrate immobilization*) AND soil*. Studies were included when they met three criteria. First, gross soil N transformation rates were quantified using 15N isotope tracing or isotope dilution techniques. Second, samples were restricted to the upper 0 to 30 cm of mineral soil, and organic horizons were excluded. Third, we retained only observations representing baseline conditions of the reported land use. Experimental manipulations, including warming, altered precipitation and carbon dioxide (CO2) enrichment, were excluded.
