An Overview of Wireless Power Transfer Technologies of Vehicular IoT Systems
Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) has become a revolutionary development in technology to support the operation of electric vehicle charging from remote end through Internet of Things (IoT) systems. The intelligent transportation infrastructure will be maintenance-free. Traditional roadside battery-operated sensor types have limited lifespan, high cost of maintenance and can only be deployed in large-scale smart city set ups where battery swapping facility is available. The paper is a review of the WPT technology that can be used for charging information and activation from remote end. Charging electric vehicles through IoT networks will be done through WPT system, such as inductive coupling, resonant inductive coupling, capacitive coupling, radiofrequency (RF) power transfer, and new optical technologies. Powering systems architecture that drives roadside sensors, vehicle-mounted and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication nodes are examined. The major technical drawbacks are efficiency, misalignment, mobility, electromagnetic interference, safety regulations and cost of deployment. Which are critically looked at. Also, it is integrated with energy harvesting, power control using artificial intelligence (AI), and the subsequent wireless power transfer to the battery of electric vehicle. The paper presents gaps in research and provides pathways to be taken in the future. For Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the highly efficient WPT system with minimized misalignment, increased mobility, reduced electromagnetic interference can be achieved net zero carbon emission through the help of IoT.
