Design of a PIDD 2 Control Law for Frequency Regulation in Fuel Cell-powered Nano Grid

Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: In this study, a new controller for frequency management in a fuel cell-powered nanogrid is proposed. Frequent load variations, system nonlinearities, and external disturbances make it challenging to maintain frequency stability in fuel cell-powered microgrids. Despite their widespread use, traditional PI and PID controllers usually perform miserably in such intricate operating conditions. This study proposes a target-loop-based PIDD2 control strategy for effective management of frequency deviation in a nanogrid system. Phase margin (PM) requirements are used in the controller’s design to ensure robustness and appropriate dynamic behaviour. Thorough simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the capability of the proposed controller under the following scenarios: faults, input and output disturbances, time delays, measurement noise, and nominal conditions. The results clearly illustrate the supremacy of the proposed PIDD2controller in terms of transient responsiveness, robustness, and disturbance rejection when compared to an ongoing 2PD–PID control system. Additional performance indicators illustrate the efficacy of the proposed approach, suggesting it is a feasible choice for reliable frequency control in fuel-cell-based nanogrids.
