Selenoproteome dynamics in the gut microbiome across disease severity in ulcerative colitis

Abstract: Selenoproteins are a class of proteins with selenocysteine replaced instead of cystein residues. This modification greatly enhances nucleophilicity and redox activity properties and therefore play a critical role in oxidative stress. Selenium at or near the catalytic center enables these proteins to efficiently reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and restore oxidatively modified biomolecules. By acting as key antioxidant components, they promote cellular resilience during oxidative stress, such as that present in for example inflamed tissue.
