Socket Sense: Smart Data Termination Detection for Minimizing Telecom Downlink Overhead

Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Smartphone applications, including Google apps, social media platforms, and games, maintain constant Internet connectivity for users. However, users often disengage from content and switch tasks, resulting in socket connection closure on the smartphone. While TCP-based sockets notify servers to halt data transmission via FIN, RST or Zero Window messages, UDP-based sockets lack such notification or rely on applicationspecific termination mechanisms, causing the server to continue transmitting data unnecessarily. This data is eventually discarded at the User Equipment (UE). Such inefficiency leads to increased data consumption and strain on network resources, particularly Radio access Network (RAN) air resources and processing requirements across RAN layers. To address this challenge, we introduce a lightweight and energy-efficient solution designed to handle diverse traffic scenarios effectively. Our evaluation encompasses various traffic types and round-trip times (RTT) across multiple applications. The results demonstrate a notable reduction of up to 4% in data consumption at the UE, thereby enhancing user experience and optimizing network resource utilization. Additionally, UE data discards are reduced significantly, further contributing to efficient network operations. As 6G aims to achieve ultra-low latency, high efficiency, and seamless connectivity, this solution contributes to minimizing unnecessary data transmission and improving overall system performance.
