SICSS-Melbourne 2026 Post-Mortem Report

Year: 2026
Type: report
Abstract: This report is a postmortem of the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science held in Melbourne (SICSS-Melbourne 2026) from 22 June to 3 July 2026. It was the second SICSS held in Australia, organised by the Australian Internet Observatory (AIO) and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S). Written from the organisers' perspective, it reflects on what worked and what could be improved. It covers collaboration between institutions, funding and logistics, program design, participant selection and communication. It also covers the two-week structure: a week of talks and workshops, then a week of team projects built on briefs from industry partners. The report describes the key decisions made along the way and what came of them. It is intended as a practical resource for future SICSS organisers and anyone running intensive research training in computational social science.
