Teaching Dimensioning in AutoCAD in Multimedia and Computer Design Studies: A Technical Communication Perspective

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The article presents a study based on a deep interdisciplinary approach that integrates perspectives from communication studies, educational sciences, and the subject discipline. The study also relates to the field of engineering education, which is highly relevant for universities with a technical profile.Using the case study, the research clarifies the students' understanding of dimensioning in technical drawings and identifies key didactic aspects of technical communication. The study demonstrates how tools of technical communication, i.e., specifically dimensioning in AutoCAD, can be purposefully applied to teach the logic of structuring engineering information to students of Multimedia and Computer Design (MCD).Rational and purposeful dimensioning fosters students' critical and creative thinking, their ability to select essential information, and their responsibility for clear communication of information to another user.Understanding that redundant dimensions should be avoided helps students prevent duplication of information and encourages them to focus on functional relationships between geometric elements.
