Preparation and performance of spherical Pd/Al2O3 eggshell-type catalysts for passive autocatalytic recombiners

Type: article
Abstract: Spherical Pd/Al₂O₃ catalysts with an eggshell-type structure were prepared with varying Pd loadings (0.02–0.50 wt%) by a new procedure involving only a Pd precursor, Al₂O₃ spheres, and an organic compound that functions as a solvent for the Pd precursor as well as a stabilizing and reducing agent. The catalysts were tested for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (4.5% H₂ concentration in air), with reaction temperature and hydrogen conversion being monitored. The catalysts demonstrated a rapid response time and excellent activity for hydrogen oxidation, even at the lowest Pd loading (0.02 wt%), achieving 98% H₂ conversion. In long-term tests, the catalysts exhibited good overall stability, even under conditions involving substantial liquid-water accumulation; however, catalysts with lower Pd loadings (0.02 and 0.09 wt%) were less stable than those prepared with higher Pd contents (0.20 and 0.48 wt%).
