Abstract: The role of tourism in rural development has been long recognised also in Hungary, and tourism is seen asan especially important tool in the development of areas backward from socio-economic aspect where othereconomic activities have weak chances. Border regions are often backward, but, just because of theirisolation, have preserved natural and cultural values that can be the foundation of their tourism development. The Dráva Region is one of the poorest areas in Hungary, but it is a region outstandingly rich in naturalvalues. Despite the significant amounts of previous supports, it is only excursionists that have discovered thearea so far; the number of tourists and guest nights is still extremely slow. The paper analyses the problemsand provides recommendations for the development of the region’s tourism in a way that the results can bepartly or completely utilised for the other similar domestic areas.
